Renovation Update

The Transition School is a temporary school building used to house students and staff while their school is undergoing renovations. The renovation of Martin begins in July, and is expected to be complete for the opening of school in August 2024. Martin students will only attend classes at the Transition School for the 2022-2023 and the 2023-2024 school years. The Transition School is built from modular units and connected to provide the look and feel of a traditional school. It has 32 rooms to be used as classrooms, administrative offices, a media center and meeting spaces. Additionally, the Transition School’s multipurpose room doubles as a cafeteria and gym. There is a separate kitchen so food can be prepared on site and children can fully participate in the CCPS meals program. AlphaBEST will continue to provide before- and after-school care. Grade-level teachers will have individual classrooms; however, teachers for certain classes will come to the students rather than moving students to another classroom. The Transition School was first built in 2000 when CCPS began renovating Ryon. Once Ryon students moved back into their school, the facility was used for the Lifelong Learning Center and by Hanson. In 2014, a fire destroyed part of the building, which was replaced. The Transition School was used by Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School from 2017-2019 and Eva Turner Elementary School from 2019-2021. During the 2020-2021 school year, staff and students from Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School are at the Transition School.

All Martin students will be eligible for bus transportation to the transition school. School hours may be slightly adjusted. Information about the location of bus stops and school times will be provided to parents closer to the first day of school.

Martin Principal Todd Wonderling is planning to host an open house at the Transition School closer to the start of the new school year.

A playground, with equipment for both younger and older students, is on the site.

The Transition School security is modeled after all CCPS schools. The administration area is at the front of the school, providing a secure area for visitors to sign in and the monitoring of guests. Visitors must show ID before being invited inside the main office.

The school system is currently in the design phase of the Martin renovation project. The renovation phase of the project begins in July.

T.C. Martin Elementary School opened in 1967. The renovation at Martin will modernize the spaces, while an addition will be built to expand the state rated capacity. The project will upgrade all mechanical and electrical systems to meet current standards and codes. The plans provide areas for a separate cafeteria and gymnasium, conversion to a geothermal heating system, an expanded health suite, an enlarged media center to include a makers’ space and a guided entry vestibule into the main office.
